Transport Survey

Establishment of a ComprehensiveTransportation Information Infrastructure

National Transport Surveys

Objectives

The purpose of a national transport survey is to compile basic data to conduct travel demand analysis by collecting and analyzing basic data related to passenger and freight transport. With that data, then build, use and share a national transport database composed of all data necessary for transport policy making and transport project analysis.

Legal Grounds

  • Article 9 of Traffic System Efficiency Act and Article 6 of the Enforcement Decree
  • Statistics Approval Number 11627 (2005-09-21)
  • Statistics approval by Article 18 of Statistics Act, statistics published by Article 27 of Statistics Act

Statistical Targets for Surveys

    • Traffic volume surveys: 162 corridors in various cities (city and county), major thoroughfares in the capital and metropolitan areas (824 locations)
    • Vehicle occupancy surveys: analysis of transport card data and compiled computerized data for intracity, intercity and express buses
  • Freight (as of 2011)
    • Distribution surveys for mining, manufacturing, and wholesale: businesses in each field with 5 or more employees (about 10.2%)
    • Distribution surveys for warehouses: warehouse and distribution businesses (about 37.6%)

    • Distribution hub transport volume surveys: vehicles entering/exiting major distribution hubs (300 points at 128 distribution hubs)

Survey Methods

visit households, onsite, video recordings

Timing and Frequency: every 5 years, initiated January or December of the target year

  • Standard Survey: every 5 years, nationwide
  • Occasional Survey: when necessary to supplement standard surveys or for specific needs
